how staying hydrated can help fertility

  • 2 min read

You probably know by now that water is essential to life, and proper hydration has a whole host of benefits. For the average person (though we know you're far more fabulous than average), eight 8-oz glasses per day help flush out toxins, improve mood & mobility, clear skin, and so much more. Our bodies are about 60% water, so keeping that water replenished consistentlyis key to great health.

Hydration is even more key for mamas and mamas-to-be, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding. But what about before that baby bump forms? Can staying hydrated help when you're trying to conceive? Hydration is not necessarily as crucial during TTC as it is during the pregnant and breastfeeding phases, but it can still help some! Even better, it's shown to have benefits for both men and women during this stage. So while mama-to-be should be drinking up, so should dad-to-be.

According toCNY Fertility, hydration can help women's fertility by:

  • Supporting egg health
  • Helping cushion and lubricate reproductive organs, creating a great environment for the embryo
  • Helping produce cervical mucus, which helps the sperm reach the egg
  • Balancing hormones which is important for reproduction

According toBabyMed, hydration can help men’s fertility by supporting:

  • Semen health
  • Sperm mobility
  • Overall reproductive health

You definitely need to increase your water intake while pregnant and breastfeeding--to 10 glasses of water per day, and 13 glasses of water per day, respectively. You do not, however, necessarily need to increase your water intake while you're trying to have a baby. The suggested eight 8-oz glasses per day for both men and women during this time is a good rule of thumb.

You can, of course, make hydrating a little more fun by adding a U.Siip water enhancer to that glass of H2O. It was developed with mamas and mamas-to-be in mind, but that doesn't mean that that dads can't enjoy it, too!
